College Hoops: The Kansas Jayhawks Move to the Top of the Heap — For Now

Following wins over UMKC and Milwaukee, the Kansas Jayhawks became the fifth team this season to ascend to the top spot in the national rankings. Honestly, their temporary coronation was more a product of the previous #1, Louisville, falling to Texas Tech. Louisville and Duke have been the only NCAA basketball teams this season to stay on top for consecutive weeks, both dropping after two weeks — let’s see if Kansas sticks around.

Here’s a look at this week’s college hoops schedule on Sling.

Tuesday, December 17
North Florida Ospreys (7-5) vs #19 Florida State Seminoles (8-2)
8:30pm ET on ACCN
The Ospreys are coming off a 72-69 win over Southern Miss Sunday in which the North Florida starting five all scored in double digits, with forward Carter Hendrickson notching his fourth double-double of the season, going 13-10. FSU is wrapping up a 9-day layoff since their 72-53 win over Clemson in which the team went 15 of 32 from 3-point land

Wednesday, December 18
Miami RedHawks (5-5) vs #3 Louisville Cardinals (10-1)
8:30pm ET on ACCN
The RedHawks beat Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, 79-67, behind Bam Bowman’s 20-points on 8-of-14 shooting. On Saturday, the Cardinals beat up on Eastern Kentucky 99-67, as Jordan Nwora led all scorers with 26 and the team as a whole shot 71% from inside the arc, 47% from outside the arc and 96% from the line.

North Carolina Tar Heels (6-4) vs #2 Gonzaga Bulldogs (11-1)
9pm ET on ESPN2
The Tar Heels are officially in crisis mode after losing 68-64 to Wofford on Sunday, their third loss in a row — to be fair, UNC was without starters Cole Anthony and Leaky Black, who are both hurt. The team has shot just 33% from the floor, including 25% from 3, and 58.2% from the line during this skid which has left the team unranked for the first time in 5 years. The Bulldogs racked up their third win against a ranked team in as many weeks, an 84-80 victory over ‘Zona on Saturday, with Corey Kispert leading the team in points (18) and rebounds (8).

Utah Utes (8-2) vs #6 Kentucky Wildcats (8-1)
11pm ET on ESPN2
The Utes beat Weber State on Saturday by a score of 60-49 thanks to Timmy Allen’s 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Kentucky’s Ashton Hagans’ 21-7-7 led the ‘Cats in all three categories in their 67-53 win Saturday over Georgia Tech.

Thursday, December 19
#7 Maryland Terrapins (10-1) vs Seton Hall Pirates (6-4)
7pm ET on FS1
The Terps suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday of last week, falling 76-69 to Penn State, despite outrebounding them 44-31. That’s what can happen when your team shoots just 33.3% from the floor. The Pirates lost on Sunday 68-48 to Rutgers, as star guard Myles Powell had to sit out the second half with a concussion that will keep him out of Thursday’s game.

Wofford Terriers (7-4) vs #4 Duke Blue Devils (9-1)
7pm ET on ESPN2
Wofford is coming off a 68-64 win over North Carolina, their second victory over UNC in three years. The Terriers took advantage of the absence of Cole Anthony and Leaky Black to score 16 unanswered points in the second half. Duke hasn’t played since their 77-63 win over Virginia Tech back on December 6, as Tre Jones led the team in points, rebounds and assists with 15-6-4.

Friday, December 20
Southern Methodist Mustangs (8-1) vs Georgia Bulldogs (6-3)
7pm ET on SEC
The Mustangs took their first L of the season back on December 7, losing to Georgetown, 91-74, as the Hoyas outshot them from beyond the arc 52% to 30%. Georgia fell to Arizona State on Saturday, 79-59, as they hit just 2 of 24 from downtown.

Saturday, December 21
#1 Kansas Jayhawks (9-1) vs #18 Villanova Wildcats (8-2)
Noon ET on FOX
The Jayhawks remain undefeated since their opening day loss to Duke, most recently trouncing the UMKC Kangaroos 98-57 behind David McCormack’s 28-point performance. With a team high 18 points, Jermaine Samuels was one of five ‘Cats to score in double figures in ‘Nova’s 78-70 win over Delaware on Saturday.

St John’s Red Storm (9-2) vs #16 Arizona Wildcats (10-2)
10pm ET on ESPN2
St John’s beat Brown 82-71 last Tuesday, as LJ Figueroa led the team with 23 points. The Wildcats suffered their second loss in three games on Saturday, losing to Gonzaga 84-80, despite Zeke Nnaji’s 16-point, 17-rebound effort.

Texas Southern Tigers (3-6) vs #8 Oregon Ducks (8-2)
10:30pm ET on PAC12
The Tigers smoked Concordia 85-47 on December 7, on a day when Yahuza Rasas came off the bench to put up game highs in points (17) and rebounds (15). The Ducks barely survived their game against Michigan, winning 71-70 in OT after blowing 16-point first-half lead. Oregon guard Payton Pritchard scored 6 of his game-high 23 in the extra frame.

Sunday, December 22
South Carolina Gamecocks (7-4) vs #9 Virginia Cavaliers (8-1)
3pm ET on ABC
The Gamecocks beat Clemson on Sunday, 67-54, behind A.J. Lawson’s 20 points and 6 rebounds. The Cavs rebounded from their first loss of the season by beating North Carolina on December 8, 56-47, as Mamadi Diakite scored a game-high 12 points and the Heels made just 1-of-14 from 3-point land.
