Yankees Hoping to Eliminate Red Sox from AL East Race This Weekend

When the Red Sox hosted the Yankees for a four-game series in late July, they trailed the Bombers by 11 games in the AL East. This was their chance to make a move, and for three days the Sox reminded people they were still the champs, winning 19-3, 10-5, and 9-5, as they mashed 10 homers, 21 doubles and put up a .433/.453/.892 slash line. The finale, however, was another story, as the Yankees lit up erstwhile ace Chris Sale, tagging him for six runs on five hits, three walks, and two dingers in 5 ⅓ innings.

Boston would go on to lose three in a row to Tampa before heading to the Bronx looking to get back on track. What they found instead was humiliation, as they dropped all four games. In the span of eight days, Boston went from 8 games back to 14 ½ games back.

A month later, things are even worse for Boston, despite having gone 16-10 since. Sale has been shut down for the season with elbow troubles, David Price spent more than three weeks on the IL, and they awoke on Friday trailing the Yankees by 16 1/2 games.

The teams are probably more evenly matched than their records would indicate, as the difference in their Pythagorean records is only 6 ½ games, but in the words of the great Bill Parcells, “you are what your record says you are.”

This Yankees team is a beast, and if they win three of four during this series, the Sox will be eliminated from AL East contention, leaving only the Wild Card as a possibility, but even there they find themselves 6 ½ games out. It’s tough to repeat, folks.

Watch the Red Sox host the Yankees Saturday at 4:05pm ET on FS1 and again on Sunday at 8m ET on ESPN.
