There’s nothing like rooting for the fictional underdog high school football team to fill the football-sized void in your life. As a nationally beloved sport, football movies and shows are pretty popular, so we’ve made a list of our top 10 football movies and shows.

1. Remember the Titans

You can’t talk about the top football movies without mentioning Remember the Titans. 3. Ballers

Ballers centers around the personal and professional lives of a group of current and former pro football players, including Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. Expect tons of lavish parties, huge yachts, and more than a few heartwarming moments.

4. Jerry Maguire

In Jerry Maguire, a sports agent has a moral epiphany and loses his job in pursuit of it. Trying to live by his new view on life, he continues to represent the only athlete who stays with him after he loses his job. The all-star cast, including Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr., helps this movie make the list of the top 10 football movies. Available on Starz on-demand.

5. Varsity Blues

A quintessential nineties flick, Varsity Blues is about a backup quarterback who’s given the opportunity to get in the game after the star quarterback is injured. This classic flick is exactly the sort of intense high school football drama you need in your life. Available on Starz on-demand.

6. Happy Valley

If you’re looking to infuse your football-related viewing fest with a little realness, Happy Valley is a documentary about Penn State University. The film dives into what happened after the assistant football coach, Jerry Sandusky, was convicted of abuse. Happy Valley offers a real-life counter to the Hollywood endings of many football movies. Available on Fandor on-demand.

7. Lucas

An oldie but a goodie! This 1986 football movie follows fourteen-year-old Lucas, who has fallen in love with the new girl, who has in turn fallen for Lucas’s friend. To get Maggie’s attention, Lucas joins the football team – what truer expression of love could there be? Available on HBO on-demand.

8. Rudy

In our opinion, all the best football movies star an underdog! Despite being told his whole life that he’s too small to play college football, Rudy intends to pursue his dream of playing for Notre Dame. Rudy had us laughing, crying, and cheering along as Rudy’s dreams unfold. Available on Starz on-demand.

9. The Express

Football movies are so often used as a backdrop to explore larger social issues, and The Express is a great example. The biopic looks at the life of Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy as the outstanding college football player. It’s not only a great football movie, but also an important look at how prejudices shape our society.

10. Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights tells the true story of a small town in Texas where high school football is life. Beyond its nail-biting game sequences, the movie looks at how the team’s coach, played by Billy Bob Thorton, pulls the team and the town together despite long-standing social issues. Few other football movies will leave you feeling quite as inspired as Friday Night Lights.

No matter which one you choose, these top 10 football movies and shows will tide you over until the football season kicks off again in the fall.
