Week 2 Preview: The ACC Network Returns With Miami at North Carolina

The Miami Hurricanes are brimming with hope under new head coach and Miami native Manny Diaz, who had previously been the team’s standout defensive coordinator. But his debut was tarnished by an overwhelming Florida Gator defense that had 16 tackles for a loss of yardage, including 10 sacks of Miami QB Jarren Williams. But even in the face of that swarm of Gators, Miami managed to take the lead in the fourth quarter before falling 24-20 and Williams was productive when his O-line wasn’t picking grass out of its collective face mask. They’ll be looking to put another ugly beatdown on the Heels, whom they crushed 47-10 thanks in part to two interceptions and a fumble being returned for touchdowns.

North Carolina is also sporting a new coach after consecutive 3- and 2-win season that brought the Larry Fedora Administration to an end. Fedora gave way to Mack Brown, who went 69-46 in his previous tenure at UNC before heading to Texas where he enjoyed even greater success, going 158-48, including 10-5 in bowl games, and winning a national championship. In just his first game back, Brown led the Heels to half as many victories as they enjoyed all of last season, thanks to a pair of Sam Howell TD passes in the first quarter en route to a 24-20 win over South Carolina.

Meanwhile, ESPN3 delivers a fantastic triple header of college football action this Saturday:

Cincinnati at #5 Ohio State
Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET
The Bearcats are coming off a season in which they went 11-2 and won the Military Bowl (whatever that is) and started this season with a 24-14 victory over UCLA in which junior QB Desmond Ridder connected on 18 of 26 for 242 yards and 2 TDs. They’ll be taking on their cross-state rivals, who’ve begun their first full season under new head coach Ryan Day, who went 3-0 after taking over from Urban Meyer last season. The Buckeyes’ receiving corps has been gutted, as they lost to graduation three receivers with more than 30 catches and 600 yards, and they lost plenty of talent to the draft including DE Nick Bosa, QB Dwayne Haskins, RB Mike Weber, and others. Don’t weep for them, as sophomore QB Justin Fields completed 18 of 25 for 234 yards and four TDs, to go along with another 61 yards rushing on 12 carries. OSU is going to be fine.

#12 Texas A&M at #1 Clemson

The Aggies finished last season at #16 in the polls after stomping NC State 52-13 in the Gator Bowl and look to be even better this year, thanks to the development of junior QG Kellen Mond and the two-pronged rushing attack of Isaiah Spiller and Jashaun Corbin. But after winning their season opener against Texas State, they’re getting to feed into the meat grinder that is the defending national champs, who opened their season with a 52-14 drubbing of Georgia Tech. The Tigers have brought back the three-headed monster that is QB Trevor Lawrence, RB Travis Etienne and WR Tee Higgins and come into the season as the team to beat.

#6 LSU at #10 Texas
Saturday at 7:30pm ET 
LSU is ranked right where they were at the end of last season. The Tigers absolutely curb stomped Georgia Southern in their opener, winning 55-3 behind senior QB Joe Burrow’s 23-for-27 effort with 278 yards and five TDs. Playing in the meat grinder that is the SEC, LSU has five conference games against ranked opponents, and in Week 2 they face their lone non-conference ranked opponent, the Texas Longhorns. Texas opened their season with a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech, with Sam Ehlinger connecting on 28 of 38 for 276 yards and 4 TDs.
