#1 LSU Takes on Ole Miss; ‘Bama Limps Into Mississippi State; Ohio State Faces Rutgers

The college football “Game of the Century” certainly lived up to the hype as Joe Burrow and the Louisiana State Tigers bested Tua Tagovailoa and the Alabama Crimson Tide 46-41 in a game that catapulted the Tigers to the top of the national rankings and Burrow to the pole position for the Heisman Trophy.

On the face of it, Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts has better numbers when you consider his production running the ball, but the fact is that Burrow has put up video game numbers while facing easily the toughest schedule in the country, one that included four top-ten teams.

Hurts’ commanding lead in passer ratings reveals a bias towards yards per attempt and a curious indifference to interception percentage or touchdown-to-interception ratio. In any event, Burrow will have ample opportunity to pad his stats as LSU’s final three opponents are a combined 12-17.

#4 Alabama Crimson Tide (8-1) vs Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-5)
Noon ET on ESPN
‘Bama took the L in the Game of the Century, falling 46-41 last week to LSU and Heisman frontrunner Joe Burrow. The Tide found themselves in a 20-point hole at the half and never quite caught up, with QB Tua Tagovailoa 85-yard hook-up with DeVonta Smith being the last gasp of a valiant comeback effort. The Bulldogs are coming off a bye week following their 54-24 dismantling of Arkansas, a game in which QB Tommy Stevens went 12 for 18 for 172 yards and two TDs and Kylin Hill went 234 yards on 21 carries and scored three times.

#2 Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0) vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-7)
3:30pm ET on BTN
The Buckeyes unleashed the Kraken on the hapless Maryland Terrapins last week, winning 73-14 with their three QBs combing to go 26-for-38 for 322 yards and four TDs, while the running game rolled for 383 yards on 56 carries and the defensive had seven sacks. Rutgers has had a week to recuperate from their 38-10 loss two weeks ago at the hands of Illinois, as they committed three turnovers and managed just 185 yards on 51 carries.

#1 LSU Tigers (9-0) vs Ole Miss Rebels (4-6)
7pm ET on ESPN
LSU’s QB Joe Burrow took a commanding lead in the Heisman race going 31-for-39 for 393 yards and three TDs in the Tigers’ 46-41 win over Alabama. Clyde Edwards-Helaire chipped in with 103 yards and three TDs on 20 carries and caught nine passes for another 77 yards. The Tigers are now 4-0 against teams ranked in the top 10. Ole Miss put a hurt on New Mexico State, winning 41-3 behind John Rhys Plumlee career day that saw him connect on 11 of 17 for 124 yards and run 12 times for another 177 yards and two TDs.

#10 Oklahoma Sooners (8-1) vs #12 Baylor Bears (9-0)
7:30pm ET on ESPN
A week after taking their first loss of the season, the Sooners barely survived the Iowa Stat Cyclones, needing Parnell Motley’s interception of Brock Purdy’s two-point conversion attempt with 24 seconds on the clock to seal the deal. Jalen Hurts lost ground in the Heisman race, despite going 18 for 26 for 273 yards and three TDs to go along with 22 carries for 68 yards and two scores. After a tedious four quarters of trading field goals with TCU, Baylor found themselves in an overtime shootout, finally prevailing 29-23 as Charlie Brewer ran for one score and passed for two more.

Arizona Wildcats (4-5) vs #6 Oregon Ducks (8-1)
10:30pm ET on ESPN
The ‘Cats took a fortnight off after dropping their fourth straight, a 56-38 loss to Oregon State, using the time off to address their QB controversy. Senior Khalil Tate has completed 124 of 200 passes for 1,633 yards, 12 TDs and eight picks, while true freshman Grant Grunnell has gone 83 for 125 for nine touchdowns and just one interception — not sure why this is so hard. The Ducks are two weeks removed from their 56-24 win over USC, a game in which Juwan Johnson hauled in seven passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns as Justin Herbert completed 21 of 26 for 225 yards and three TDs, the defense forced four turnovers, and Mykael Wright returned three kickoffs for 148 yards and a touchdown.
