Top 5 Marathi Actors & Actresses

The Marathi television industry is known for taking up social issues and progressive themes, expressed through the talents of skilled actors and actresses. The Marathi film industry is a similar story, as it’s known for its realistic filmmaking and social themes. In this list, we look at the top five Marathi actors and actresses currently working in film and television, with each celebrity having worked or currently working in television at some point in time. 5. Amey Wagh
At number five on our list is film and television actor Amey Wagh. Born and raised in Pune, he acted in college plays. He auditioned for the role of Chatur in the film “3 Idiots,” but was rejected. It wasn’t until he was 31 years old that got his big break in the film “Aiyyaa” (2012). Since then, he then went on to act in “Ghantaa” (2016), and then won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (male) in the Filmfare Awards Marathi 2018 for “Muramba.” In terms of television, Wagh became famous for “Dil Dosti Duniyadari” (2015) and “Dil Dosti Dobara” (2015). He was also part of the Netflix series “Sacred Games” (2018), appearing in its second season.

4. Siddharth Bodke
Siddharth Bodke is a prime example of the road not taken. He began working as a VJ for a local channel in Nashik before becoming a jockey for Radio Vishwas 90.8 FM. Famous for the serial “Tu Ashi Javali Raha,” which shows off his versatility as a dominating personality. He has also such shows as “Asa He Kanyadan” and “Assa Sasar Surekh Bai.” Bodke has also acted in plays such “Suyog Productions’ Ananyaa,” “Sandhyachhaya,” “The Client of Witch,” and “Mantraval.”

3. Swwapnil Joshi
Swwapnil Joshi is one of the best known faces in the Marathi film and television industry, Joshi has bagged crucial roles in both segments. Some of his movies include “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye” (2008), “Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai” (2010), “Duniyadari” (2013) and “Mogra Phulaalaa” (2019). His famous serials include “Krishna” (1993), where he made his debut as a 9-year-old. Others are “Comedy Circus,” “Ghar Ki Baat Hai” (2009) and “Fu Bai Fu” (2012). Joshi has even started hosting shows such as “Superstar Swapnil Joshi Fan Quiz” and “Selfie with Superstar Swapnil.” He goes in at number three on our list.

2. Girish Oak
A veteran in the Marathi film and television, Girish Oak is a noted playwright. He had completed his MBBS, but switched to acting due to his sheer love for the art form. Among the plays Oak has written are “Kusum Manohar Lele,” “Deepstambh” and “U Turn.” He is currently acting on the hit show “Agabai Sasubai,” which runs on Zee Marathi. Other serials of his include “Julun Yeti Reshimgathi” (2013), “Fu Bai Fai” (2012) and “Bandini” (2009). Along with films and serials, Oak also writes poetry, and has published a few books along the way.

1. Subodh Bhave
The undisputed king of the Marathi film and television, Bhave began his career at an Information Technology firm in Pune before switching to acting full-time. His most famous play is “Katyar Kaljat Ghusali,” which was adapted into a movie in 2015. It remains one of Marathi cinema’s highest grossing films and was considered for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s Fellini medal. Bhave is currently acting in Tula Pahate Re, which runs on Zee Marathi. Bhave’s most well-known movie is “Lokmanya:Ek Yugpurush” (2015), in which he played the role of Bal Gangandhar Tilak. The most wanted actor in the Marathi industry, Bhave has staked his claim at the top of our list.

5. Tejashree Pradhan
Number five on our list is “Agabai Sasubai” star Tejashree Pradhan. Pradhan has acted in films such as “Zenda” (2009), “Dr Prakash Baba Amte” (2014) and “Judgement” (2019). Her serials include “Lek Ladki Ya Gharchi” (2012) and “Honar Sun Me Hya Gharchi” (2013-16). Her series “Agabai Sasubai” has seen Pradhan move up the ladder, because her acting has been a giant factor in the show’s overwhelming success.

4. Prajakta Mali
Number four on our list is “Julun Yeti Reshimgathi” actress Prajakta Mali. Mali, who has training as a Bharatnatyam dancer, only began her formal acting career in 2011. She has acted in various short roles in the Marathi film industry, including “Party” (2018), “Sangharsh” (2014), “Kho-Kho” (2013) and “Gandhi – My Father” (2007). She is also currently anchoring on the hit Marathi comedy show “Hasyy Jatra,” which is broadcasted on Sony Marathi.

3. Akshaya Deodhar
The young actress rose to prominence with the serial “Tuzjhat Jeev Rangala,” which premiered in 2016. Three years on air, and the show is still running strong. Its plot sees an illiterate wrestler (Hardik Joshi) fall in love with a school teacher (Deodhar), who just moved to the village. The show has received positive reviews, especially for Deodhar’s acting. She also performs in plays, including “Item” with  Ameya Wagh, “Binkamache Sanwad” and “Darshan.”

2. Shruti Marathe
One of the biggest Marathi television and film stars, Marathe has also starred in tamil cinema. She made her Marathi film debut with “Sanai Choughade” in 2008, and has held roles in “Guru Shishyan” (2010), “Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2” (2015) and “Wedding Anniversary” (2017). Stints in television have seen Marathe act in “Sant Sankhu,” “Peshwai” and “Radhi Hi Bawari.”

1. Mrinal Kulkarni
Veteran actress Mrinal Kulkarni tops the list at number one. Kulkarni made her debut at the age of 16 and appears in Hindi and Marathi serials. Notable shows include “Avantika,” “Raja Shivchatrapati” and “Zindagi… Teri Meri Kahani.
