Things to Sling: Royalty Edition

In honor of Meghan Markle’s transformation from television actress to royal princess — or, most likely, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex, but technically also HRH Princess Henry of Wales — this weekend Sling celebrates a few other royal titles. Check out the shows and films that, more often than not, remind commoners audiences heavy is the head that wears the crown (whereas tiaras tend to be a bit more fun). Click the links in the titles below to watch from the comfort of your Chrome web browser.

1. Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance

Before you watch the wedding, watch the couple’s courtship as depicted in Lifetime’s surprisingly well-received original movie. All those years polishing plucky-American-meets-charming-royal -type scripts clearly paid off.

2. The Royals

Or, if you prefer your sovereign stories with a bit more soap, then the latest season of The Royals on E! could be just what you need.

3. Game of Thrones

Winter might finally have come to Westeros, but the rest of us have a few more seasons to get through before the TV gods grace us with the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, reportedly premiering in the spring of 2019. Until then, you can binge all seven seasons of warring kingdoms (ahem, Khaleesidoms) on HBO.

4. Richard III

Magneto, Iron Man, and Professor McGonagall (Ian McKellan, Robert Downey Jr., and Maggie Smith, respectively) star in this kingly Shakespeare adaptation you probably watched in high school but now might actually appreciate, available on Tribeca Shortlist.

5. The White Princess

If Richard III doesn’t satisfy your presumably boundless interest in the Wars of the Roses, then learn how the Lancastrians and Yorkists kept up the fight in the years following Richard’s defeat. Watch this acclaimed monarchical miniseries, which features at least one face you might have seen recently: before she was busy Killing Eve, Jodie Comer was The White Princess, Elizabeth of York, on Starz.

6. The Real Princess Diaries: From Diana to Meghan

This E! special features a panel of style and culture experts ready to weigh in on the lasting legacy of the People’s Princess.

7. Black Panther

Saving the best for last, Wakanda’s King T’Challa and Queen Ramonda and Princess Shuri all arrived on digital earlier this week. Rent Black Panther in SD for $4.99 or HD $5.99.

Or, if your weekend plans don’t include much wiggle room beyond watching Meghan Markle in a wedding dress, then USA has you covered. The full seventh season of Suits, featuring Mike and Rachel’s season-finale wedding (and Markle’s final screen role), is available on demand.
