Sling Movie Spotlight: Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman’s had quite a run: Married first to Tom Cruise and now to Keith Urban, she’s played a neurosurgeon, a psychologist, a grieving mother, a muse, an ADA, Virginia Woolf… the list goes on and on. Along the way she’s been been nominated for four Academy Awards, winning once, and received 13 Golden Globe nods, winning 4.

This Friday she returns to the big screen in the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Goldfinch, as a woman who takes in a young boy orphaned by a terrible tragedy that takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Early reviews are mixed, so maybe you’d be better off getting your Kidman fix at home. We’re here to help…

The Beguiled (2017)
Writer-director Sofia Coppola’s film about a wounded Civil War soldier who’s given shelter and care at a girls’ boarding school, touching off all kinds of trouble. Co-stars Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning.

Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
A remake of the insanely good Argentine thriller El Secreto de Sus Ojos, Kidman is an assistant District Attorney overseeing an investigation by Chewitel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts into the death of Roberts’ daughter.

Rabbit Hole (2010)
Starz On Demand
Kidman and Aaron Eckhart star as a couple dealing with the loss of their child, who was hit by a car driven by a local teen, played by Miles Teller in his big screen debut. Directed by John Cameron Mitchell and adapted by David Lindsay-Abaire from his play of the same, this is a truly great, if painful, film. Kidman was nominated for Best Actress.

Nine (2009)
Showtime on demand
Rob Marshall directs this musical starring Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, and Sophia Loren, about a film director in search of his next idea while also juggling a wife, girlfriend and star.

The Others (2001)
Starz on demand
Kidman stars in this truly great slow-burn horror film about a woman who moves with her two kids to ride out WWII in a creepy old mansion.

Batman Forever (1995)
TBS on demand
This time around Kidman is Dr. Chase Meridian, a psychologist who falls for Bruce Wayne. This is the Batman where Val Kilmer took over for Michael Keaton, and co-stars Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face and a never-hammier Jim Carrey as The Riddler.

Days of Thunder (1990)
8am ET Tuesday, September 17, Sundance Channel
The cauldron in which the love between Kidman and Tom Cruise was forged, she stars as a neurosurgeon who falls for a young race car driver. Some people dismissively called it “Top Gun with racecars,” but those people… Actually, those people were pretty much on the money.
