To quote Bill Shakespeare, love is a many splendored thing. And by splendored, he meant complicated, messy, thrilling, terrible, crushing, and fulfilling.
The 2012 romantic dramedy Stuck in Love captures the emotion in all of its facets. Starring Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly, the movie focuses on two generations of family navigating the ups-and-downs of romance. Kinnear plays Bill Borgens, a novelist still reeling from his split with his ex-wife Erica (Connelly). Meanwhile, his kids Samantha (Lily Collins) and Rusty (Nat Wolff) are figuring out their own attitudes toward love, with college-aged Sam adopting a detached promiscuousness while the romantic Rusty pines for a rebellious classmate.
Stuck in Love details a tumultuous year in their lives, as they each must reconcile their feelings in the face of new circumstances. The movie was written and directed by Josh Boone, who went on to helm The Fault in Our Stars, another film that examines the utility of love. But unlike that movie’s life-or-death stakes, Stuck in Love has a breezy, casual tone well-suited for its cast.
Love may be full of splendor, but it’s rarely easy. Stuck in Love understands this, so if you’re looking for a light, lovely film to enjoy this Valentine’s Day, you’ll fall for its charms.
