Rob Zombie Presents ’13 Nights of Halloween’

Gather ’round, kids, for a spoooooooky story…

Once there was a rock star who loved horror movies so much that he named his band White Zombie (after a 1932 Bela Lugosi flick), named himself Rob Zombie, and sang almost exclusively about death, dismemberment, blood, gore, aliens, clones, robots, and just about every other horror trope you can think of. When this rock star turned his attention to filmmaking, he couldn’t get a studio to release his first movie, House of 1000 Corpses, for three years because of concerns it was too grotesque and violent for a wide audience (which is exactly why it’s a cult favorite today). Zombie went on to direct The Devil’s Rejects and a remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween and Halloween II before moving into horror comics with titles like The Adventures of El Superbeasto and Whatever Happened to Baron Von Shock?

All of this more than qualifies Rob Zombie to preside over HDNET Movies’ ‘13 Nights of Halloween,’ starting Thursday night with The Devil’s Rejects and moving on to include creepy classics like Wes Craven’s highly influential 1972 spookfest The Last House on the Left, both the 1958 Steve McQueen-led horror camp favorite The Blob and the 1988 remake (which Zombie was at one time slated to re-remake); Brad Pitt’s early star turn as a redneck serial killer, opposite Juliette Lewis and David Duchovny in Kalifornia; Nicole Kidman in the 2002 haunted house thriller The Others; the baffling self-parody of 1995’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, featuring an embryonic Renee Zellweger as the Final Girl and a cackling, over-the-top Matthew McConaughey as a psychotic murderer; and the most critically acclaimed thriller ever made, 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, featuring Jodie Foster as a young FBI agent who turns to convicted serial murderer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) for help chasing another killer.

Each film is introduced by Zombie with a little bit on why he chose it and what he loves about it, plus a little trivia (did you know Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation features as many Oscar winners as The Silence of the Lambs?). I’m looking forward to Zombie’s thoughts on The Blob, in particular, since he almost remade it.

‘13 Nights of Halloween’ begins Thursday, October 19, with a double feature of The Devil’s Rejects and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, and continues with two movies a night, and then an all-day marathon on Halloween.
