After months with nothing more than blurry photos leaked from set (and after literally forcing fans to watch ice melt), HBO finally dropped the trailer for the new season of Game of Thrones that premieres on July 16, and it’s clear the seven-episode season will be worth the extra wait. But what does it all mean?!
Because there’s so much to process, here is every important scene to help you decipher each little clue:
Grey Worm and the Unsullied look ready to kill some Lannisters…
…and the Iron Fleet is closing in on Westeros, too. (It’s really dark, but there is almost certainly a ship in there).
Could that be a Dornish spear?
Arya will absolutely continue to bring the pain this season.
From the sound of it, everyone now stands in their way; Cersei just said their enemies are closing in from all directions.
(‘Cause Cersei killed Kevan and Lancel with wildfire.)
Tyrion gets to hang with dragons now. So much cooler than lions. And he’s at Dragonstone, so that means….
…Dany is FINALLY at Dragonstone! People have waited decades for this moment (it goes without saying this still hasn’t happened in the books).
Based on the cliffs and zig-zag stairs, Melisandre also seems to have made her way to Dragonstone just in time for Dany’s castle-warming.
Bye, Cersei. There’s a new queen in town.
Could the Unsullied have breached Casterly Rock? There’s an “L” and some lions above the archway. No time to find out for sure, though, because we’re off to Winterfell…
Jon Snow! And Brienne and Sansa, no doubt trying to figure out how to stop the Night King.
But Littlefinger is clearly up to no good…
And later on we see Davos and Jon pursuing Littlefinger through the crypts at Winterfell.
Ser Davos offers a warning, and a vocabulary word of the day: “en·mi·ty (ˈenmədē); noun, plural noun: enmities. The state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something.” Pretty impressive for a guy who just learned how to read (RIP Shireen).
These might look like random Wildling redshirts at first, but it’s pretty clear later on that these scenes are of Jon and Tormund, potentially trying to make it back through the gate.
You go Jon Snow!
But based on this defensive stance it seems like they didn’t quite make it, and there’s
probably definitely an army of White Walkers all around them. As for the rest of the characters…
…it looks like Theon is on the ship that gets torched a little later in the trailer, which could be the same ship from the (super dark) opening sequence.
Could this be a merciful end to Theon’s wretched, tortured existence?
Of course not! Someone jumps into the water, and Theon will surely live to see another body part cut off. That’s just how GRRM rolls.
This is almost certainly Jorah’s Greyscale-covered hand briefly seen reaching through a slotted door…
…and while on the subject of things that probably should have rotted away by now, how is the Mountain still standing? Maester Qyburn didn’t exactly do a bang up job bringing him back.
Blink and you’ll miss it, but Grey Worm + Missandei and Yara(?) + Ellaria seem to be getting along just fine despite the apparent threat of total war.
