Somewhere in the ether between paranoid fever dream and schizophrenic anthology lies Happy!, back with a bang for its sophomore season (and, no, I don’t just mean that it has exploding nuns…but it does) at 10pm ET Wednesday on SYFY. Leaving the Yuletide massacre of Season 1’s evil Santas and deranged mafiosos behind, our heroes must now confront last season’s villain – Sonny Shine (Christopher Fitzgerald) – who has pledged to “Make Easter Great Again” with the aid of his sadistic Easter bunny sidekick (Patrick Fischler). Adapted from Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson’s graphic novel of the same name, Happy! returns invigorated with fresh conflict and gore galore.
Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni) and his imaginary flying unicorn sidekick Happy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) return to right wrongs and kick all sorts of Easter-tide tail this season (and I don’t just mean the hideous pastels and stale jelly beans). Playing the newfound role of father to young daughter Hailey (Bryce Lorenzo) and not-so-distantly-exed-husband to Hailey’s mother Amanda (Medina Senghore), Nick finds himself torn between worlds: As a part-time cab driver and part-time mercenary, Sax is battling his past sins and proclivities as he fights to protect and secure his family’s future.
From the outset of the first episode, it’s clear that Nick simply cannot deny his knee-jerk killer tendencies. Our beloved anti-hero finds himself hot on the trail of TV-icon-turned-mob-boss Sonny Shine with his old law enforcement partner Meredith McCarthy (Lili Mirojnick). As Nick clings to the straight-and-narrow of his newfound sobriety and fatherhood, his heuristic journey leads him to combat enemies new and old. As Sonny seeks to re-brand Easter through malevolent means (and a dash of help from the Church) Nick et al seek to expose the villainous kidnapper and foil his nefarious plans. This season will be one for the history books — guaranteed to “blow minds and melt eyes” – or so SYFY promises.
New episodes of Happy! premiere at 10pm ET Wednesdays on SYFY, and Thursdays On Demand.
